Dolphins
During the cruises to Woody Island, dolphins are often common companions of the vessel. Both Common and Bottlenose dolphins can be seen off the Esperance coast.
Sea Eagles
The majestic white-breasted sea eagles are residents on several of the islands. Two families await the arrival of the boat and crew where we attempt to feed them. Watch their precision when retrieving a fish from the ocean with their feet.Australian Sea Lions
Scattered throughout the Recherche Archipelago, the Australian Sea Lions are found on many small rocky outcrops. Keep your eye out for the bull (male) sea lions that only represent approximately 10% of the population. They stand proud with a distinctive lion's mane marking running down their back.
New Zealand Fur Seals
Marvel at how close your experienced skipper can approach these cute and friendly animals. Watch as they show off their impressive diving and synchronized swimming abilities. Always a highlight of the cruise.
Cape Barren Geese
The Cape Barren Goose is a very large, pale grey goose with a relatively small head. The western species found in the Recherche Archipelago are rare but are often spotted on the sheltered sides of Cull & Charlie Islands. Their grey colour allows them to camouflage in well with the granite rock. Test your wildlife viewing skills and see if you can find them before our crew.
Cormorants
Commonly known as a black faced shag, the cormorants co-exist with the New Zealand Fur Seals adjacent to Seal Rocks. Nesting in the ledges on the steep granite slopes, the cormorants spend their days feeding and sun-baking.
Whales
During June - October, whales venture throughout the Recherche Archipelago. Two types of whales visit: Southern Right Whale (SRW) and Humpback Whale. The SRW is the predominant species in Esperance
Flesh-footed Shearwaters
The Flesh-footed Shearwater, commonly referred to as Muttonbirds, have several breeding sites on Woody Island. A newly constructed lookout allows you to closely view the mothers coming in to feed their chicks during the spring months.
Little Penguins (Fairy Penguins)
Little Penguins are the smallest of all penguins and the only species to live permanently in Australian waters. They can be found on the Eastern side of Woody Island when they come ashore in the evening to take shelter, breed and moult.
